《Dinosaur Story》(Rex: A Dinosaur’s Story) restored version will be released in the United States in December

The 1993 Japanese film Rex: A Dinosaur’s Story will be screened in multiple theaters in the United States.Kani Releasing has released a trailer for the restored re-release, which is scheduled to be released on December 11, 2026, making this movie about a little girl and a young Tyrannosaurus rex in time for the Christmas season.

Chie, played by Yumi Adachi, is the daughter of a paleontologist.Tsunehiko Watase plays the father. He co-discovers a dinosaur egg, which hatches out of a baby Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Chie becomes friends with it.

I found that it quickly attracted profit-seekers.Someone wants to turn the dinosaur into a business and let it continue to shoot advertisements, model, and sell various products; Qianhui and Rex then escape from these arrangements and have to avoid the suspicious man in black. The chase extends from horse-drawn carriages and snowmobiles to hot-air balloons, and fairy-tale friendships are interspersed with banter about commercial development.

This kind of ridicule also corresponds to the announcement of the movie that year. The film uses cross-media promotion, extending to toys, CLAMP comics, songs and other fields. The release introduction also links the Christmas elements in the film to the popularity of KFC as a holiday consumer symbol in Japan.

The production of the monster is by Carlo Rambardi. His previous works include Alien, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Possession. The dinosaurs in the film rely on physical special effects with changing expressions, leather-covered performances influenced by Japanese special photography, and height jokes completed in the camera. There are also a lot of Christmas scenes in the film. The distributor described the film as both cute and imaginatively quirky, with both family fun and cult fun.

《Dinosaur Story》 is directed by Haruki Kadokawa, written by Maruyama Shoichi and Kadokawa Haruki, and produced by Kadokawa Haruki, Okuyama Kazuyuki. The film is based on the original work by Masanori Hata. The film was released in Japan in July 1993. It was on the same summer schedule as Jurassic Park, but it did not gain the same momentum.Haruki Kadokawa was arrested in a cocaine smuggling case that same year and resigned from the company, which also interrupted the development of the film at that time.

According to the distributor, this is the first time the film has been restored in high definition. The currently announced screening dates for December are as follows.

The official website of the distributor also lists a record of screening at the Japan Society in New York on July 10 this year, so December is not the first time the film was screened in the United States.
