DreamWorks remote animation team approves first union agreement

Remote workers at DreamWorks Animation have voted to approve their first union agreement.Employees who participated in the vote were represented by the animation union, and 97“ of the 108 eligible employees voted in favor of the agreement, with a turnout rate of 83.3”.This agreement is primarily intended for remote animation practitioners who do not work in Southern California.

The most immediate changes in the agreement are wages and working conditions.Remote employees will receive the same minimum wage, workplace protections, health benefits and retirement benefits as their colleagues in Los Angeles covered by the Animation Union Master Agreement.When the master agreement is renegotiated in the future, relevant changes will also be applied to remote teams simultaneously.

This bargaining unit contains storyboard artists, animators, character effects artists, technical directors, lighting engineers, visual developers, modelers, and production coordinators.The positions listed in the report cover multiple aspects of animation production, so the agreement affects not just one type of job.

Remote workers made their move to unionize public in the fall of 2025.The key point they raised at the time was that they hoped to receive similar medical, retirement and job security as their offline colleagues.In the National Labor Relations Board election in December of the same year, the pro-union side won 52 votes to 10, and the two sides negotiated for several months before forming the first agreement.

Negotiating committee member and storyboard artist Anthony Holden said many remote workers have worked in the same industry for years, some for decades, without the same protections as their colleagues in the Los Angeles office.Once the new agreement comes into effect, they can live and work in different regions while retaining arrangements such as health insurance and pensions.

The animation union's master agreement has long covered a large number of animation jobs in the Los Angeles area.As remote work becomes more common, the differences between employee location and treatment become more pronounced.This new agreement brings remote positions into similar standards, and specific terms will be adjusted along with subsequent negotiations on the main agreement.

The report did not disclose new salary figures for each position, nor did it specify the full length of the agreement.What has been confirmed is that remote teams receive minimum standards and benefit protections comparable to their colleagues in Los Angeles.For the animation industry, this is the latest collective bargaining agreement around remote production methods.
