Animation《Tangles》(Tangles) is based on the cartoonist's experience of caring for his sick mother

Sarah found love in San Francisco in the 1990s and began to live independently; her mother Mickey was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and brought her back to the conservative town and her weird and imperfect family.IFC has released the first trailer for the animated feature film Tangles, which is based on Sarah Levitt’s comic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me.

A return trip brings Sarah back to her energetic mother.After the disease was diagnosed, she had to face the cruel reality that her mother's memory was gradually fading. She had to go back to assume caregiving responsibilities, and relearn how to be the daughter her family needed.There is a line in the trailer that expresses the situation the character faces.Family relationships have always been complicated, and the film follows laughter, heartbreak, and joy to show the emotional connections that maintain family members even as memories fade.

Abbey Jacobson voices Sarah, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus voices mother Midge.Bryan Cranston, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen and Samira Wiley also join the voice cast.

This is the feature directorial debut of Canadian animation creator Leah Nelson, who has previously made short films and co-founded Vancouver animation studio Giant Ant.The film's animation was produced by the studio.The script was adapted by Nelson, original author Levitt and Trev Rennie.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year.FirstShowing author Alex Billington gave a positive review in this preview report and listed it as one of the outstanding animated films in 2026 in his eyes; he particularly valued the film's emotional expression of family and disease experiences through animation.

The producer list includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren Miller Rogen, James Weaver, Alex McCarty, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Jen Ray, Rose Murray, Sophie Hogg, Vicky Patel, Steve Barnett and Alan Powell.

The report mentioned that the film will be screened in December during the awards season, but no specific date was given.IFC has confirmed that it will be released in some theaters in the United States starting from January 15, 2027. The poster released with the trailer also stated that it will be expanded nationwide in the United States on January 22.
