Neil LaBute's new film to premiere in Oldenburg

The new film directed by Neil LaBute will have its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival.The film, a darkly comedic thriller, is being developed by LaBute, who will also receive a lifetime achievement honor during the festival, along with actress and screenwriter Gia Krovatin.

The protagonist of the story is Marion, a budding screenwriter, played by Crovatin.She encounters an ex-boyfriend and a suspected stalker, and the two clash over accusations that Marion stole his creative ideas.Thomas Sadoski plays the man, and Jordan Baker also stars.

Reports describe the film as a confined space thriller with an early Hitchcock feel.LaBute and Krovatin mentioned that the first half of the story would allow the audience to see Marion in danger, with the tension later evolving as the characters are trapped in the same space.

The film was shot at a location in New York's Hudson Valley over a total of ten days, divided into two one-week sessions.The crew had a very limited budget and the production was based on a single scene.LaBute sees the experience as a return to the ways of working on low-budget independent films.

LaBute said he and Krovatin both liked the sense of spatial control that early suspense films had.A house and a small cast allow the performances and relationships to take center stage.The film puts the story within this scope, and as the characters continue to approach, there is less and less room for Marion to leave.

The story's location was inspired by an old mill-turned-house in Salt Point, New York.Krovatin said a photographer friend took them to see the building, where the water wheel was still running, and the constant sound of water and the setting of the old house gave LaBute the idea to include it in a film.

LaBute and Krovatin are also partners in real life.After LaBute completed the script, Krovatin wanted to play Marion herself.She said that to raise funds for independent films, well-known actors are usually needed. The project had approached some thriller actors, but the two finally decided to make the film in their own way.

Kravatin was auditioning for other series at the time.After an important audition failed, she asked LaBute to complete the film as soon as possible.LaBute then found investors and the crew returned to the rhythm of a small-scale production, completing the main content in a house.

The local community was also involved in the filming.LaBute and Krovatin mentioned that the crew was helped by local film committees, local crews and friends who offered their time and accommodation.The film was completed without the resources of a major production, a process Krovatin calls a community-supported shoot.

The story of the film has no supernatural elements and focuses on the fear of being followed by an acquaintance who gradually reveals his dangerous side.LaBute said the potential for threats in everyday relationships was something they wanted to make into a thriller.Marion's change from victim to active counterattack is also the focus of the character that Krovatin talked about.

Krovatin described Marion as starting out like a survivor in a typical thriller, with the character later being forced to make more proactive choices.The tug between her and Sadowski's character is the central conflict of the film.The two creators did not reveal the specific twists in the second half of the story in advance during the interview.

The Oldenburg Film Festival will be the first occasion for this new, low-budget film to face an audience.In addition to the film's premiere, LaBute will also receive a lifetime achievement honor from the film festival.The film's subsequent release arrangements have not yet been announced in this report.
