Xunzi, who regarded Confucius as his spiritual mentor, was different from most scholars who clung to tradition and had a broader mind and vision. He did not reject all schools of thought other than Confucianism, nor did he favor the views of his Confucian predecessors.Xunzi proposed the theory of "evil nature", which competed with Mencius' theory of good nature. He believed that people are not moral because they cannot avoid morality in their nature, but because people know that they should be moral, so they strive to be good.
