The huge cephalopod creature below the sea brought almost nothing but death and fear at first. The story then reveals its relationship with the iceberg: it is a mother protecting her cubs in the iceberg.Like ice fisherman Calvin Penny, played by Josh Hartnett, he's struggling with his family. What’s on Netflix recently interviewed visual effects supervisor Matt Glover, talking about how the team made the same creature gradually appear to be in pain from threat.

This supernatural horror drama, which takes place on the coast of Newfoundland, finds a real-life basis for the monster setting.Glover said that creator Jesse McKeown did a lot of research and consulted marine biologists during the screenwriting stage; the special effects team also consulted an expert with a Ph.D. who has written books on cephalopods.Features such as the creature's hard shell have already been written into the script. The team hopes it's very ancient, and that prehistoric cephalopods did have hard shells.
Studio Mr.The early presentation follows a similar idea as Jaws, allowing the audience to see part of the story first and then recognize the whole picture later.“We hope to reveal it bit by bit.Glover explained that the team deliberately designed different outline clues: initially only one eye was exposed, making people guess whether it was a whale, a shark, or something else; then the arms and legs briefly came into view, and the question became a giant squid or octopus.Especially in the first few episodes, these features that can be identified but cannot be put together immediately bear the task of building suspense.

The monster's movements are still based on animals, and as the body is gradually revealed, the audience will gradually feel its pain.Glover said that the beginning can be very brutal, and a lot of the violence is only hinted at; but the moment to truly understand it needs to be reserved for the character who also realizes that it is not the biggest threat, but is just trying to survive.

Glover points out that cephalopods can live in cold, deep waters, but the creatures in the show stay in places that are too warm, and their bodies continue to deteriorate and lose color bit by bit.It spends most of the sixth episode very pale, leaning against the iceberg, and moving more slowly than before.”It is losing some body functions.Glover said this allowed the animators to put more tumbling, stacking and powerless motion into the arms and legs.Near the end, it is almost breathing its last breath, both trying to survive and clinging to the iceberg.Penny then dragged the iceberg toward deeper, colder waters.

By the season finale, humans and creatures come face to face, and their relationship has changed.Calvin saw himself in its eyes. The Mr.Glover said of the final gaze treatment that it was really looking at Hartnett intently at that moment because it was the last time the two parties were together; the team therefore made the direction of the gaze very clear. But in other shots, even when it's looking close to the camera, its eyes suddenly move away and look around.

“We wanted to retain the animal's intent while also telling its story with the other characters.”Glover said.
